Algal Bloom Update, SA Govt

Published Thu 18 Sep 2025

Algae is a natural part of our ecosystem and some blooms are harmless, but the current one in South Australia, the Karenia species, is harmful to fish and some marine animals. This algal bloom was first detected on the Fleurieu Peninsula and has since spread naturally, impacting about a quarter of South Australia’s coastline.

Consequently, this bloom is having a serious impact on marine life and the industries that rely on it - especially fishing, aquaculture and tourism. In response, a $28 million support package has been announced. Funded by the South Australian and Australian governments, it is going towards research, supporting impacted businesses and communities, clean-up efforts and public information.
